Grandfather Mountain Highland Games

The Grandfather Mountain Highland Games is a proud tradition for many families in the high country as well as across the globe, and is the largest gathering of Scottish Clans in the world! Zach, the first of the two Yeti’s attending, showed up around 9 am to the 66th annual Grandfather Mountain Highland Games. Zach’s family has been attending the games for a long time, due to being members of Clan Gregor and Clan Duncan!
He started the morning by taking in the early sights and sensations of the festival; people preparing for their competitions, vendors setting up, and the smell of haggis being prepped and cooked.
Around 10:30 am Josh, the second Yeti, showed up. This was his first time experiencing all of the wonderful sights, sounds, and culture of the festival. By that time the crowds had gotten thicker and everything was is full swing
From there, the real exploring commenced! It was an explosion of Scottish culture from Kilts to Bagpipes to Tossing the Caber! It was the closest thing to actually being in Scotland as you can get! When 12 pm rolled around, it was time to go see the Piper Jones Band perform their spin on traditional Scottish music. It was an amazing performance and had many from the crowd dancing along with the fun and upbeat tunes.
After, was the always fun to watch sheep and duck herding. It was great to learn the history and techniques of the traditional sheep herders in Scotland. The Shepherd Dogs were especially fun to watch how they would creep towards the herd as low to the ground as possible, and then suddenly blast off with such force to run and corral the flock
Throughout the day, many competitions were held and many cheers were heard, but the best part of the day was getting to witness and experience the love and appreciation that everyone had for each other! It is definitely an event that is now a new tradition for the Astro Yeti’s!
